A bit of a deviation from the point of your post as a whole, but the JK Galbraith quote reminds me of the argument for renaming the friendly-sounding "global warming" to the implicitly more ominous "climate crisis".

Yep, its a pretty common, if high end and expensive tactic now. The canonical example is the way the American right wing stopped talking about the evils of the estate tax and started calling it the "death tax" instead...
