proce55ing

Processing 1.0 ALPHA

its a data visualizing art project. Couldn't figure out what was cool about it on a quick surf, but Casey Reas is involved so I'm bookmarking it for reference. For the now though it just seems like an unimpressive data visualization program, but I assume there is more.

Abe, I met Casey Reas and Ben Fry at Ars Electronica where proce55ing was both on display and discussed in the symposium. What's cool about it is that it not only is a data representation, but an emergence representation as well. Each trace is generated by a "data bug" with its own rules about tracing and interaction. The images that emerged were not only aesthetically pleasing, some displayed nature-like characteristics. Interestingly, the aesthetics can be appreciated at multiple levels - as the final art object, as the process of the traces and as the control images that track the individual "bugs."

Processing is a complete programming environment. It's built for the audience of artists and designers and is a tool for learning and sketching in code. Many people are making information visualization with it, but the project is much more than that.
