Today USA Wakes Up to the Power of Structure
Why don't Americans walk anywhere?
Old answer: They're lazy.
New answer: They can't.
There is no sidewalk outside the front door, school is 5 miles away, and there's a six-lane highway between home and the supermarket.
That's from USA Today! Ideas spread. Slowly. But they spread.
The way cities and suburbs are developed could be bad for your health.

I live in a suburban neighborhood where the only people who walk are grownups and the only reason they walk is for exercise. The gentle curves of the roads combined with overhanging shrubbery combined with the lack of sidewalks make it unsafe for children to walk down the street. Playmates arrive in cars, and playdates must be scheduled weeks in advance. I can't imagine growing up that way, but that's how my kids are growing up.
