Non-standard Domain Names
Anyone out there have an opinion on all the weird non standard "dots" you can get a domain in?
I've got a new project idea and the desired domain is of course taken. Well ".com", ".org" and ".net" are gone. Which puts me into the realm of ".info" and ".us". Can I get away with that in this day and age? I'm leaning towards ".cc" but I could just get another name...

No. Get a different name. Don't get anything but a .com, .net, or .org.

Abe, another alternative is to get a partner in another civilized country and use the country domain, like .ca (Canada) or .co.uk in the UK.
It is fascinating to me that the US's TLD is seen as having less credibility, and is often psychologcially associated with scammers, spammers, and pornographers. On the other hand...

Well, dot orgs retain their credibility, don't they? Although too many owners seem to ignore that they are reserved to non-profit organizations and individuals, and sell stuff under such domains (and I'm not talking about the "tipping jar" for donations).
Getting a partner in another country may be a nice idea, if registrars aren't as slow and restricted as they are here in France. (A six months long procedure; individuals must provide identity documents, and aren't free to choose the name: they can only get lastname dot fr.)
